So, I’ve been doing pretty well on my first 3 days of paleo(ish)…Monday was good, most of yesterday was good…I made paleo hummus (pictured) which is mainly just zucchini plus garlic, tahini, and olive oil…its actually pretty tasty and kind of tastes like hummus.
Last night we went for Mexican and they put those tortilla chips down…and I couldn’t control myself. If there are chips in front of me I’m going to eat them. Duh. Ordered fajitas, had one tortilla, ate the rest straight off the plate. Didn’t touch the rice, one bite of beans. Honestly, its actually better than I usually doe at Mexican…so while I’m disappointed that I dove into the chips, I’m happy that I didn’t completely fail.
Salad for lunch today…dinner is to be determined.
Hummus recipe if you are interested
Last night, Ryan (the violist in my quartet) invited myself and the BF over (and some other friends) for paella…he did it the real way: ordered a giant paella pan and cooked the stuff over an open fire in his backyard. Its basically the Spanish version of risotto…lots of scallops, mussels, chicken…a few veggies. It was super tasty, and kind of ridiculous.
I also made cheese dip…which was kind of tasty too. It got sent back with us along with a huge tub of paella…I don’t think we will need to cook for weeks.

#cinco de miler
The weekend in race food!!
- Pizza + hot dogs (+beer) after soaking ourselves (nearly) to death with sweat following the MacArthur Park 5k
- Amazing pasta dinner prepared by my dad (be jealous) the evening before the Cinco de Miler after we drove up from Little Rock
- Montana Hash (potatoes + veggies), eggs over easy, and an apricot cheese flakey at the Luck Platter in Evanston, IL after the Cinco de Miler.
The BF and I had dinner at 1620 Restaurant here in Little Rock this evening. He performed a holiday show there a few months ago and in return got a certificate for a free meal…was delicious!! Beef tartar, shrimp croquettes, veal ravioli with layers of short ribs and mashed potatoes (pictured), sausage and shrimp with black eyed peas and fried green tomatoes, and a rum chocolate souffle for dessert!
(and of course a few glasses of wine…)

Dunno if those two things will remotely go together, but we’ll find out after I serve them with whole wheat pasta tonight…
Maybe not super healthy…but it should be nice and warm after a day of freezing rain!!!
This is lunch today.
I’m going back to paleo(-ish). It worked for me when I did it in September/October. I mean, I was starting to look really good. And its really easy. But then symphony season really started up, and there were bars and beer and delicious chicken tenders and fries and giant pretzels with cheese dip and burgers (with buns). Lucky for me, I did a half marathon and then started training for a full…I gained some weight, but not nearly as much as I should have. Unfortunately, the few pounds I gained don’t look so hot. Its back in my face and jiggling around a bit on my belly. Numbers aren’t important, but I want to look better than this.
I’ll be honest. I’ve never done STRICT paleo. I just eat mainly meat and veggies. I’ll still get sauce on stuff, I’ll have some cheese. If something comes with rice or beans or potatoes, I’ll have a few bites, but not eat the entire portion. This is a diet that really works for me, and I find it really easy to keep it up, as long as I make the decision to do so.
I got some really good news yesterday that came out of nowhere. Its really better than I could have imagined…can’t share anything till its definite though, and its definitely not definite. But I’m using the positive energy from that news to make a positive change in my life/eating habits. Easier when you have some momentum going!
I’m still going to have some carbs before long runs and races and such. I don’t succeed when I totally cut something out of my diet, because then I just want it all the time…but if I just keep it up most of the time, its still going to work for me.
Wish me luck! I’ll let you know when I lose those 10 pounds back.

The yellow slices are cheese. I actually was going to make breakfast sandwiches on the biscuits…but then I decided to just assemble all of the sandwich ingredients on the plate so you could mix and match and do your own thing. There was also a little dipper of maple syrup. And no…I haven’t eaten anything since then. Although I kind of want to.
